Hailing from beautiful Vancouver, Canada, Ezra is excited to put his knowledge and passion for learning to the test as the 4th-grade teacher and PYP Coordinator at North Jakarta Intercultural School. Graduating from the University of British Columbia with a B.Ed, he worked several years with inner-city children in Surrey, B.C. During that time, Ezra returned to school and graduated with an M.Ed in School Leadership from Western Washington University.

With extended teaching stays at the American Foundation School of Monterrey, Mexico and Singapore American School, Ezra is happy to now call Indonesia his home. Outside of work, you can find him spending quality time with his family, losing golf balls on one of Jakarta’s many scenic courses or zipping up and down the ice during an ice hockey game at Bintaro Xchange Mall

Mr. Warren Wessels introduces himself as a South African educator hailing from Durban, a popular destination known as “South Africa’s playground.” He holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Further Education and Training from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Mr. Wessels specializes in Biological Sciences and English Language and Literature, recognizing the importance of biology in understanding life and the significance of English in navigating it. Drawing inspiration from Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer, he embraces the idea that painting is literature expressed through colors, while literature is akin to painting using language.

Mr. Wessels embarked on his teaching career in 2010, initially instructing Senior Biology and English at his alma mater, Durban Academy. After six and a half years, he decided to explore new opportunities and found his way to NJIS, where he currently teaches. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Wessels derives his passion for life from nature, acknowledging the incredible beauty of our planet. With a camera in hand, he aims to capture the captivating wonders, diverse cultures, and remarkable individuals that inhabit our world. He abides by the personal motto inspired by philosopher Rumi, encouraging himself and others to venture beyond comfort, embrace notoriety, and seek out those who ignite their passions.

I am currently in my eighth year as a teacher and it has been the greatest adventure of my life. In that span of time, my flexibility and adaptability has been put to the test. Initially my goal was to foster an environment that  promotes meaningful and collaborative learning among my students. I have witnessed the beauty of classrooms where students are engaged and motivated. But as an educator, I knew that helping my students learn the content through meaningful lessons and activities was not the end goal.

I have come to a realization that being a huge part of the formation of my students, I have a responsibility to ensure that certain values and principles are inculcated in their young minds.  It has been a personal advocacy to open their minds to the social realities outside of their comfort zones. I want them to see the value of empathy and a sense of civic responsibility even in their young lives.

Esi is a Canadian certified teacher qualified to teach Kindergarten-Grade 6. She has experience teaching in both Indonesia and Canada since 2004. She received her teaching credentials, Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Masters of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Growing up, Esi had the experience of attending school in Birmingham, England, starting when she was in Grade 3. Later, she met her life partner (Mr. Dan, the PYP 5 teacher) in Vancouver Island, Canada, in 2001, when both were involved in community service helping first nations

Aside from being a teacher, she developed her entrepreneurship skills while on maternity leave in Canada. With her child’s diet and allergy needs, combined with her interest in baking, she opened a vegan and gluten-free cupcake store. Her other passions include facilitating dance education activities for Kindergarten to grade 6. For example, her two favourite workshops are teaching the fast-paced “Kecak” dance from Bali and the smooth “Saman” dance from Aceh. She loves helping boys and girls build confidence physically, socially, and creatively.”

Westy Irene Wohon is originally from Jakarta, and she goes by Westy for short. She was born and raised in Jakarta and took English for Education, which specifies Early Childhood Education, at Atmajaya Catholic University in Jakarta. She has taught children from age 5 to 2; younger children will always have a special place in her heart. She has taught for five years before she is now working at NJIS, and this will be her fourth year teaching at NJIS. The early Years are a golden year in a child’s life, so it is essential to have a strong foundation. Westy strongly believes that learning should be fun and engaging, so creating a fun environment will build a strong learning foundation.

Christania Anthonny or Tania was originally from Indonesia. She started to work in the Early Childhood Education field from the year 2014 and fell in love with it eversince. Ms. Amanda Vanyakila, also known as Ms. Vanya to her students, is a lifelong learner and a dedicated teacher by profession. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in English Literature from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). With seven years of experience, she has been teaching at the preschool, kindergarten, and elementary levels.

According to Ms. Vanya, being flexible, creative, fun, and patient are all vital qualities that contribute to being a great teacher. However, she believes that the most crucial aspect is the passion and love for the calling to teach, which makes it “a work of the heart.” Her artistic talents shine through the way she creates teaching materials, and her love for reading is evident in her creative storytelling.

Ms. Vanya is eagerly looking forward to working with the children, viewing it as both a responsibility and a privilege.

Irene Magdalena, a Kelapa Gading native, has recently returned home to Indonesia to continue inspiring bright minds to learn and develop. Prior to this, Irene spent 7 years in the United States, where she studied Elementary Education and Psychology in Wisconsin Lutheran College. She also taught in the Milwaukee Public School system for about 2 years.

Outside of teaching, you can find Irene learning new languages or trying out different dishes from other countries. She looks forward to meeting the PYP 1 families!

With over eight years of international experience teaching the IB curriculum, Livita is a passionate advocate for inquiry-based learning and inclusive, student-centered classrooms. She holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from HELP University in Kuala Lumpur and began her teaching journey in both local and international schools in Malaysia. A formative experience at a school in London during her university years sparked her passion for education and set her on this meaningful path.

Throughout her career, Livita has taught in diverse international settings and volunteered at refugee schools, gaining a rich perspective on education across cultures. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment at the University of Virginia, with a focus on Social-Emotional Learning—further deepening her commitment to nurturing curiosity, compassion, and a lifelong love of learning. Beyond the classroom, Livita enjoys traveling, watching movies, attending musicals, and hosting board game nights with family and friends.

Jinyoung is a passionate and dedicated educator who teaches and cares for children with all her heart. Since beginning her teaching journey in 2009, she has cherished the joy of learning and the incredible experience of growing alongside her students. She completed all the professional training required to become a certified teacher in South Korea. After five years of teaching at the Korean International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, she developed a strong interest in international education and the IB curriculum.

In 2023, she embraced a new chapter in her life by moving to Indonesia and stepping into the role of an IB teacher. Known for her diligence and sense of responsibility, Jinyoung especially enjoys spending quality time with her students. Outside of school, she loves traveling with her family and diving into new worlds through books—especially when she can combine both on a trip! She is also a huge fan of musical theater and has already seen more than a dozen performances live. Her love for teaching continues to grow, and she is excited to enrich her journey at NJIS!

Holly was born in a quiet rural area in southern England and after studying for her degree, she spent time travelling around the globe with her husband – sparking a lifelong love of travel and culture. Since qualifying as a primary teacher, she has enjoyed many years teaching primary children in an Ofsted rated outstanding school on England’s coastline. During her career she has been a language specialist in school, supported many children with a wide range of special educational needs and has years of experience teaching children across all ages in primary.

Holly wanted to be a teacher from a very young age and sees her role as educator, inspiring young minds as they begin to learn about the world, as a real privilege. Outside of school, Holly loves relaxing on the beach with her family or taking long walks in the sunshine.

Mr. Dan is a certified teacher from Canada qualified to teach primary grades 4-6 for homeroom subjects and secondary grades 7-12 with specializations in Drama and Social Science. He also has a B.A. Honors in Drama in Education and Community and a minor in Psychology. Mr. Dan combines writing, role-play, and technology to create exciting learning experiences for his students.

This approach connects back to the start of his career, where he wrote and directed public education campaigns for the City of Ottawa, including a series of cartoons teaching citizens how to share the road safely. He fell in love with teaching English, Math, and Drama for five years in the Western Quebec School Board in Canada. Highlights from his time so far at NJIS include co-directing the NJIS stage musical production of Annie Jr., hosting the online NJIS Game Nights, and guiding students to take action on global issues with the annual PYP Exhibition.

She graduated from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Indonesia in 2006, where she majored in Indonesian linguistics. Roy firmly believes in creating a fun and exciting environment for students to learn and enjoy their time at school. A happy father of three, with a daughter and twin boys, Roy has a keen interest in books (especially as an avid Harry Potter fan), movies (except horror), jogging, and savoring good food (with pizza as his favorite). Before joining NJIS, Michael spent 6 years teaching in Denver and another 8 years in Abu Dhabi. He finds the most joy in teaching when students have those “ah-ha” moments and realize they truly understand a concept.

Outside the classroom, Michael is an avid adventurer and enjoys a variety of activities. He loves scuba diving, snowboarding, and playing ice hockey. Goentoer is an active member of NISC, the Network of Indonesian School Counselors, which serves as a support network for university counselors in Indonesia.

Ms. Nevi was born and raised in a small yet lovely town, Tembagapura (known as The Land Above The Clouds) in Papua. She started her career as a pharmacist and worked in healthcare industries for over 6 years. In 2016, she decided to start an adventure in Australia. She worked in various companies there, majority in hospitality industries. She experienced journeys which made her turned her career to early years education industry. Then, in 2018 she enrolled in Diploma Program of Early Childhood & Education Care. She believes that the first 5 years of children’s life is the golden moment for them to develop their cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and language skills. For her, being an educator is a long life learning so she will never stop to learn. Ms. Nevi also serves in Sunday School, teaches Grade 1-3 students. She is very grateful to be able to become part of students learning journey.
